A New Chapter in FIG History. (FIG press release)
Moutier - December 16, 2004: The Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) took leave of its former Secretary General, Mr Norbert Bueche, who, after 15 years of devoted service, has begun a well-deserved retirement. The Executive Committee has named the current Deputy Secretary General, Mr André Gueisbuhler, his successor.
Norbert Bueche is wrapping up his career after having devoted 50 years of his life to gymnastics, successively alternating between regional, national and international positions and responsibilities. His successor has been named at a time when the FIG is dealing with new situations arising from its expansion and growing popularity. Accomplished linguist, patient negotiator and well-advised businessman, André Gueisbuhler (54 years of age), will need to rally the entirety of his abilities to face head-on the challenges that are sure to come.
As the oldest international sports federation, the FIG counts 4 Continental Unions, 129 affiliated countries and some 20 million licensed gymnasts. In Geneva (SUI) in 2006, the FIG will be celebrating the 125th Anniversary of its founding in Anvers in July of 1881.
